Thursday March 27th, 2008 vehicle fire on I-86
The Chemung Vol. Fire Department
was dispatched shortly before noon on Thursday March 27th, 2008 for a vehicle
fire on I-86 in the Town of Chemung. Deputy Chief Karl Bowers responded shortly
after the dispatch and was advised that they were getting numerous calls on the
incident. Upon arrival, Chief Bowers found a well involved delivery truck in the
West bound lane in front of the Fountain Motel. A request for more manpower from
Chemung, and an engine and tanker from Wellsburg was made. West bound traffic
was already becoming a problem as drivers weren't sure if they should proceed or
pull over. A decision was made to shut the West bound lane down temporarily with
the help of NYSP units just arriving on scene. With the adequate water supply
from both engines and two tankers, the fire was quickly extinguished using class
A foam. Access to the rear cargo area was made by firefighters to extinguish a
fire that broke through the cab and the front of the cargo box. Although EMS
coverage was provided by Greater Valley Emergency Medical Services, no injuries
were reported. Traffic was restored about forty minutes into the incident. The
cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
